We all fell in love with Star Wars for a reason. Whether it's the massive space battles, badass female protagonists, or simply the fact that you and your friends connect with each other through the series, Star Wars is easily a well-loved phenomenon, and one of it's biggest characters is a mystery.
Disney+'s original show, The Mandalorian, premiered a creature that looks just like Baby Yoda - except he is not Yoda, and he is 50 years old. What is he? Who is he? and what is his name? Even though his name isn't Baby Yoda, I will be referring to him as such for the purpose of continuity in this post. There isn't much we know for sure, but we know a few things.
Like we said, he isn't Yoda. And there are a few reasons for this. A lot of viewers assumed he was Yoda since they are the same species, both the same small green alien with the power of the force, yet that is their only commonality. Continuity speaking, Jon Favreau has confirmed that The Mandalorian takes place five years after Return of the Jedi, when Yoda died at 900 years old. Even if he came back up from the dead, he would be born already being 45 years old? No way that's true. He does have many similarities to Yoda, though.
When talking about Yoda in an interview back in '05, George Lucas spoke of his creation, and how he didn't think much about it. He said, "I never figured out where he came from, what his species is called, and maybe it’s somewhere but I don’t know where it is. So he’s a mystery character, he’s a magical character, he has no background... He’s the subversive, secret, mysterious stranger that enters the film and exits at the end.” So, we really don't even know much about the species.
The only confirmed characters in this species are Yoda, The Child, and Yaddle. Are they a family? Should someone tell them they lost their son? Cause he's just running through the desert right now. It's theorized that Yoda and Yaddle did the diddly doo and out popped The Child, but when asked about their relation, Jon Favreau only stated: "I can't say, but there are a lot of theories about that." So, this is neither confirmed or denied. It is confirmed that his name is not "The Child".
Baby Yoda has been given a name, but neither Jon Favreau or Taika Waititi have revealed this just yet. Did he have a name at birth? If the theory is true, he's gotta have a "Y" at the start of his name. But, he's with the mandalorian now, and he doesn't know who The Child is, so it would be easiest for him to give Baby Yoda a name instead of always referring to him as "kid". But, we still don't know enough about the mandalorian to get a sense of what he would call his sidekick.
Hopefully more information will be revealed in season 2 of the show premiering in October later this year. Until then, let me know your theories on this and if you know any other information about the mysterious Child.
All the love,
